Mohamed Salah Racks Up Record Hat-Trick in 7-1 Rangers Thumping
Mohamed Salah clocked a new record in UEFA Champions League (UCL) history when he came off the bench on Wednesday night, 12 October, to help Liverpool steamroll 7-1 over Rangers FC.
When the home side opened proceedings with a strike from Rangers’ Scott Arfield at the 17th minute, many Reds fans feared their beloved team’s dismal luck in the 2022/23 season was set to continue.
However, Liverpool equalised as Roberto Firmino scored seven minutes later; then he found the back of the net again at the 55th minute-mark, putting the visitors into the lead. After that, the goal-scoring bonanza started in the second half, at the Teddy Bears’ expense.
With 66 minutes on the clock, Darwin Nunez made it 3-1 – then, the highlight of the evening happened when Mohamed Salah was brought on two minutes later.
Within the space of six minutes and 12 seconds, Salah had scored three goals – at the 75th, 80th and 81st minute-marks, respectively – and cemented his name into the UCL history books with the fastest hat-trick ever recorded.
Harvey Elliot rubbed salt in the Scots’ wounds, adding one last goal with three minutes left, and leaving a wide grin on coach Jurgen Klopp’s face.
Klopp was ecstatic in a post-match interview: “Obviously it was a different position for [Salah], coming on. I hope everything works for him from now on, like I hope it does for us!”
